Built by Mehmet II in an attempt to capture Constantinople, the Rumeli Hisai Fortress is an amazing place that you just have to see whilst on your Istanbul holiday.
The fortress faces the Anadolu Hisari, a castle from the 14 th century, and was designed so that it may cut off all maritime supplies to Constantinople, whilst also separating it from all of its allies. It is because of this that this stronghold has been known by the locals as Bokazkesen, or throat-cutter, for many hundreds of years.
After the Rumeli Hisai had served its initial purpose, and Mehemet had succeeded in the taking of Constantinople, the fortress was used as a prison for decades.
Nowadays, this historic place is open to all members of the public, so that they may wander around its momentous walls, gaining a feeling of what it must have felt like to work here as a soldier, or be imprisoned here as a criminal of the country.
