The most well-known bridge in Venice is the Rialto bridge that leads across the Canal Grande into the historic old city. Until the mid of the 19th century the Rialto bridge was the only connection across the Canal Grande. Only in 1854 and 1856, two more bridges across the Canal Grande were built: the Ponte dell'Accademia in the vicinity o the arts academy and a iron predecessor of the Ponte degli Scalzi close to the train station, which was replaced by its modern counterpart in 1932. Die Rialto bridge as we know it was built between 1588 and 1591 by Antonio da Ponte and opened on 20.3. 1591 by the Doge Pasquale Cicogna. The roofed bridge with its multiple arches spans 48m.
